A Bit About Our Guide.
Amy White Salibindla (she/her)
Teaching children is much more than a career path, it's my passion! I don't dread Mondays or live for TGIF. One year, I did look forward to Fro-yo Fri-yay...but that was more about the standing frozen yogurt date with my nanny kid than the day of the week.
When I was 3 years old, I declared, "When I grow up I'm going to have 100 babies!" My mom was amused and asked what I would do once those babies grew up. I replied, "No, they'll stay babies forever". She asked, "What will your husband think of having so many babies in the house?" I replied, "I'm not going to have a husband; I'm going to live with you forever". It's been over 18 years since I began caring for children, and although I no longer live with my parents, I have cared for over 100 children (sole-responsibility)...all before acquiring a husband. Not all of these children have been babies during our time together - And a few of my first babysitting kids are now old enough to drive, have married, or are off to college! However, they all have a special place in my heart and I will always remember them as little. I am eternally grateful to the dozens of parents who have invited me into their families' lives (especially in those first few years when I still had practically everything to learn) and gifted me with over one hundred reasons to love my career.
CHILDCARE EXPERIENCE
I began babysitting in middle school and quickly became a "go-to" for families at church. Throughout undergrad, I nannied as many hours as my course schedule would allow. Grad school was busy, busy so to give proper attention towards my studies I took a year off from nannying, and instead found regular and occasional babysitting work. Towards the end of my graduate studies, two of my prior babysitting families approached me and offered positions if I decided to move back home; their two schedules fit together perfectly and it was a wonderful year with two amazing families! After that year, all of the children were in school, which meant they no longer needed full-time care. In the spring of 2018, I relocated across the country to Portland, Oregon, where I began working with a handful of families and occasionally took on travel nanny positions, both domestically and internationally.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
My undergraduate experience was fairly typical: I began with the intention of earning a BSN, but then took an Intro to Psychology course my second semester and was hooked! I'm fascinated by how people think and the reasons behind various behaviors - it's like cracking a secret code (that's not so secret). I took courses that related to children and family, such as Family Communication and Parenting and Child Guidance. During my junior and senior years, I had multiple opportunities for personalized work, including extra projects for Honors College credit. I took advantage of these to research child development, discipline methods, and parenting philosophies. In May 2015, I graduated with Honors earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and minor in Communication Studies.
WHY MONTESSORI?
I’ve always known I wanted to work with children – though, in which capacity, I wasn’t quite sure. That is until one fateful afternoon, in my Junior year of undergrad, when I was chatting with my uncle. We were having one of those philosophical "solve the world's problems" conversations. I repeatedly brought up examples of working with children - as I often do - and my uncle asked if I was familiar with Montessori Education. I was not, so he suggested I research it later. I did that same afternoon and was amazed at how much it reflected the views I already had from my years of experience caring for children. Montessori is rooted in respect for the child and supports natural exploration to build knowledge. In the fall of 2015, I began my graduate studies and graduated the following summer earning a Master’s of Education in Montessori Education. In June 2018, I returned to Montessori Northwest to complete the Assistants to Infancy training to more fully support children under the age of three years.
Since completing my graduate studies, I have continued to expand my understanding of child development and psychology by reading - including authors such as Maria Montessori, Magda Gerber, Janet Lansbury, and Daniel J. Siegel. I enjoy putting into practice what I learn and observing the positive changes that result.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS:
I enjoy reading and people-watching, as well as playing board and card games. I have a deep appreciation for watching musicals and ballet performances. To stay active, I engage in yoga, hiking, and snowboarding. Additionally, I love working on jigsaw puzzles; though I consider it "cheating" to look at the picture on the box during assembly, I do encourage children to use the it as a reference.

Assistant Guide - Morning
I grew up near the Bend area and am excited for my new adventure in Portland! I am transferring to Portland State University to finish my undergraduate degree in family studies. I have 4 years experience working in Montessori preschools and am very excited and fortunate to continue my journey with Moss & Heart Montessori! I have enjoyed observing and working with children through these experiences and being able to support children throughout their development. It’s been such a rewarding journey fostering and guiding my young friends to grow, at their own pace and at their own developmental levels. The innate goodness within children is so empowering and contagious. In my free time I enjoy catching up and adventuring with my close friends and/or visiting my big family back home.

Allie (she/her)
Assistant Guide - Afternoon
Hello! My name is Allie, and I’m delighted to be part of the Moss and Heart Montessori community. I’ve worked in early childhood education for over two years with both toddlers and preschool-aged children, developing skills in classroom management, communication, and supporting children’s emotional and academic growth.
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to Portland in 2021. Working with children has always been a passion of mine, and I love getting to know each child’s unique personality—whether that means sharing a story, helping through a tough moment, or making daily routines fun and engaging. Having experience with multiple age groups, I’m especially drawn to the mixed-age environment at Moss and Heart, where children can learn from and support one another. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, writing, and exploring Portland by bike.
Britta (she/her)
Culinary Collaborator
I’m a chef, artist, and Portland native who finds endless joy in connecting people through the creation and sharing of food. At Moss and Heart Montessori, I’m excited to help children discover where their food comes from and to nurture independence, curiosity, and joy as they learn to prepare and share meals together.
I’ve spent decades cooking in a wide range of environments—from refined professional kitchens to rustic outdoor setups—and have worked as a chef, caterer, instructor, and mentor. I believe deeply in the power of food to build connection and community, and in the importance of teaching children essential life skills like nourishing themselves and communicating with others. My approach reflects Montessori values of exploration, creativity, and respect for the natural world. I’m thrilled to share my passions for food, teaching, and curiosity with the Moss and Heart community.
Support Staff
First introductions from the Salibindla Boys
Blaze(y Boy)
aka Cutie Kitty, Blaaaaaaaaze
As the Lion of the house (LOTH), he loves making the dining table his den and the chairs his throne. He has many vulnerabilities, including fist/head bumps and playing ‘feather on a string‘. A special mention to his love for food. He enjoys demonstrating a variety of advanced skills to receive tidbits. He’s a leader in the field - All respect is due. The arrival of guests is one of his life’s greatest joys, basking in the anticipation of treats for his trick shows.
Zubenelgenubi
aka Zubi Nubi, Zubi Doobi
Zubi is often found greeting students on the sidewalk and escorting them into school, taking his role as morning ambassador quite seriously. He loves being outside, wherever the action happens to be. His favorite days are school days—he seems to live for the thrill of children chasing him around the yard, joyfully calling, “Zubidadah!”
He’s been known to occasionally interrupt lessons by flopping onto a work rug or simply leaning into his role as a local celebrity. Mr. Z also looks forward to the steady rhythm of school-day nap time, often curling up on a blanket for a snuggle as though it’s written into his job description.
During class meals, the Zubster dutifully checks the pail where children pour out the last of their milk before bussing their dishes—always with the unwavering optimism of someone who truly believes this could be the day. Unlike his co-cats, he remains unconvinced by the whole treats-for-tricks economy; catnip is his vice of choice.
Zubi has gathered an enthusiastic fanbase —one parent even claiming he single-pawedly changed their opinion about cats. He’s the cool guy who doesn’t know he’s cool, simply living in the moment, taking life as it comes, and never meeting a stranger.
Kiko(chan)
aka Little Kitty, Kieks
The Keek-meister is a true athlete—launching himself down a short flight of stairs in a single bound or performing mid-air twist jumps while hunting his favorite “bird” (which, for reasons unknown, insists on living its entire life attached to a wand). He may be the smallest on the field, but he’s always the first to volunteer: “Put me in, coach.”
Kiki is also the pride’s premier cuddler—an expert in strategic underfooting. Humans trip over him constantly, because for this little fella, proximity is a sport of its own. If he could fuse himself to a warm lap, he absolutely would. He even prefers to sleep with his head above his heart, as though he’s discovered the secret to perfect feline alignment.
“Copy Cat” was a title earned honestly. Anything his co-cats do, Kiko feels compelled to try… unless it involves approaching a group of enthusiastic young children. In that case, he’ll politely pass and retreat upstairs to catch up on cutie rest with Blazey Boy—his mentor, roommate, and role model.
Through pure observation (and perhaps a little hero worship), Kiko has mastered the arts of “standing” and delivering a high-five with his paw. A small cat with big athletic dreams and an even bigger heart—our Keek-meister is in a league all his own.
