Nutrition for Body & Mind
Moss & Heart offers nutritionally balanced snacks and lunch each day—provided at no extra cost to families—designed to nourish both body and mind. Current recipes are ovo-vegetarian, and menus are planned with sensitivity to the cohort’s food values as well as any allergies or dietary needs. Amy’s family cooks South Indian cuisine for many meals at home, so these recipes—gently adapted for young palates—may be offered occasionally.
Meals are prepared in collaboration with our school’s culinary guide, who supports whole-food preparation, recipe development, and seasonal menu planning. This partnership ensures that food is both nourishing and joyful, while giving children the opportunity to experience a wide range of flavors.
Food is served family-style whenever possible, supporting the Montessori principles of independence and community. Children are invited to serve themselves, pour water, clear their dishes, and occasionally assist with simple food preparation. These small acts help them build confidence, coordination, and a sense of contribution to the life of the classroom.
We encourage children to explore new foods—and previously tasted foods—as taste buds evolve with time and repeated exposure. While children are never forced to eat anything, they are supported in keeping foods on their plates and treating the meal with respect. Conversations about food are common and meaningful: guides talk with children about what different colors and types of foods offer our bodies and how nutrition supports growth, energy, and well-being.
Each meal is thoughtfully composed with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein to support steady energy, healthy development, and a positive relationship with food. When sweetness is offered, it comes through whole foods or is paired with fiber to support balanced absorption.
